Temporal vs n8n

Both orchestrate workflows, but they solve different problems. Here's how to choose between Temporal's durable execution and n8n's visual automation.

Temporal n8n Workflows Automation

“We need to automate a workflow” can mean two very different things. Sometimes it means connect these SaaS apps so a thing happens when another thing happens. Sometimes it means run a long, mission-critical process that absolutely must not lose state, even if a server dies mid-way. n8n is excellent at the first. Temporal is built for the second.

n8n: visual automation

n8n is a low-code workflow automation tool. You build flows by connecting nodes on a canvas: triggers, integrations, transformations, and actions.

Strengths

  • Fast to build. Non-engineers can wire up integrations visually.
  • Huge connector library. Hundreds of built-in integrations with popular SaaS tools.
  • Great for glue. “When a form is submitted, enrich the lead and add it to the CRM and notify Slack” is a five-minute job.

Limits

  • It’s optimized for relatively short, event-driven automations.
  • Long-running, stateful processes with complex retries, human approvals over days, and strong consistency guarantees aren’t its sweet spot.

Temporal: durable execution

Temporal is a platform for durable, fault-tolerant workflows written in code (Go, TypeScript, Java, Python, .NET). You write your workflow as an ordinary function, and Temporal guarantees it runs to completion — even across process crashes, deploys, and infrastructure failures.

Strengths

  • Durable state. Workflow state is persisted automatically. If a worker dies, execution resumes exactly where it left off — no lost progress.
  • Built-in retries and timeouts. Define them declaratively per activity; Temporal handles the bookkeeping.
  • Long-running by design. Workflows can run for seconds or for months (think: a 30-day trial nurture sequence, or a human-in-the-loop approval).
  • Code, not canvas. Full testing, version control, and the expressiveness of a real programming language.

Trade-offs

  • It’s an engineering tool. You run workers and a Temporal service (or use Temporal Cloud).
  • More upfront setup than dragging nodes on a canvas.

How to choose

If you need…Choose
Quick SaaS-to-SaaS glue, built by ops/marketingn8n
Event-driven notifications and simple data shufflingn8n
A process that must never lose stateTemporal
Long-running orchestration (hours to months)Temporal
Human-in-the-loop steps with reliable resumptionTemporal
Complex retries, compensation, and consistencyTemporal

They’re not mutually exclusive

In practice, many teams use both: n8n for lightweight integrations at the edges, Temporal as the reliable backbone for core business processes. The mistake is forcing one tool to do the other’s job — running a critical, multi-day workflow in a tool meant for glue, or standing up a full orchestration platform just to post a Slack message.

When we design workflow automation — often with Temporal, NestJS, and AWS — the first question is always the same: what happens if this fails halfway through? Your answer to that usually tells you which tool you need.
